In Silence, He Built the Future: Pak Eko’s Legacy in Shaping Batam through Vocational Education
BATAM – That morning arrived with news we were never prepared for. The passing of Dr. Ir. Priyono Eko Sanyoto is not merely the loss of a respected figure, but the loss of a key pillar in the journey of human resource development in Batam.
He was known as both an academic and a practitioner who dedicated most of his life to vocational education. Serving as the Director of Politeknik Negeri Batam from 2001 to 2020, he led the institution through a significant period—a crucial time when Batam was transforming into a national strategic industrial hub. During his leadership, he did not only build an institution, but also shaped the direction and character of vocational education itself.
Under his leadership, Polibatam grew rapidly, transforming into an institution that is highly adaptive to industry needs. The curriculum was strengthened with a practical approach, partnerships with industry and business sectors were expanded, and a professional work culture was instilled early among students. He clearly understood that Batam’s challenge was not only growth, but also the readiness of its human resources to keep pace with that growth. And it was at this point that he became the answer.
Much of his work was not widely visible, yet the results are evident and undeniable. Polibatam graduates have been absorbed across various industrial sectors, becoming skilled professionals who are not only needed but also capable of competing at both national and international levels. Many of them may not have known him personally, yet they stand as living proof of the vision and long journey he built.
What made him even more remarkable was his personal character. He was known to be low-profile, humble, and far from the spotlight. Holding a high position did not change the way he carried himself. He remained calm, modest, and chose to work quietly behind the scenes. He did not seek attention or recognition. Yet, within that simplicity shone the sincerity and true strength of his leadership.
For students, he was a father figure—perhaps not always present in words, but felt through the direction and policies that safeguarded their future. For colleagues, he was a model of integrity—firm in principle, yet wise in decision-making. And for the world of education in Batam, he was a solid foundation that will continue to support generations to come.
His passing—even in the midst of a simple activity such as cycling—seems to reflect the life he lived: active, balanced, and meaningful until the very end.
Today, we may have lost him physically. Yet his values, spirit, and legacy will continue to live on—in every graduate who walks with confidence, in every classroom that nurtures hope, and in every dream of the nation’s children that he helped bring to life.
