POLIBATAM-The animation team called “Satu Persen” from Politeknik Negeri Batam Animation Study Program succeeded in achieving 1st place in the GEMASTIK (National Student Performance in Information and Communication Technology) XVI competition in Division V in the animation category. This competition event was pioneered by the National Achievement Center program, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, where the peak event took place on 12-16 September 2023 in stages offline and hybrid at Brawijaya University, Malang.
This competition event, organized by the Indonesian Talent Development Center/Balai Pengembangan Talenta Indonesia (BPTI), was attended by 2,781 teams from various universities throughout Indonesia. Finally, 220 teams were selected who successfully advanced to the finalist stage from a total of 11 division categories. GEMASTIK is a competition program that develops Indonesian students’ talents in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field and its use. This year, GEMASTIK XVI was held again with the theme “ICT for Advanced and Sustainable Development of Indonesia.”
The Satu Persen Team from Politeknik Negeri Batam Animation Study Program won 1st place in the GEMASTIK event for the first time in the history of the Animation Study Program since this study program was formed. Previously, Politeknik Negeri Batam had won 1st place and 2nd place in GEMASTIK in 2014, which was participated by a team of students from the Multimedia and Network Engineering Study Program. Then, the same enthusiasm was continued by winning 2nd place in GEMASTIK 2017 at the University of Indonesia. Finally, after more than 5 years of trying, Politeknik Negeri Batam won another gold medal through a team of students from the Animation Study Program at GEMASTIK 2023 held at Brawijaya University, Malang.
The Satu Persen team comprises three students from the Animation Study Program class of 2020. The team is led by Muhammad Asaduddin Alfayyadh as team leader, Ilham Wahyu Dewantoro and Deny Setiowati as members, with Anis Rahmi S.Tr. Kom., M.Sn., as an accompanying lecturer. The animation work presented in the competition is entitled Laut Kite and can be watched via the YouTube channel under the name “Satu Persen Animations“.
Laut Kite tells the story of a junior high school student (Abi) who lives in a coastal village with his grandfather. The condition of the ocean, which is filled with rubbish, means that fishermen cannot meet their daily needs, which prompted Abi to start a movement to clean up rubbish by inviting the village community. However, the villagers refused Abi’s invitation and preferred to focus on their respective smartphones. Seeing this, Abi had to think hard until finally, he got inspired to invite them via the smartphone, using live broadcast media.
Muhammad Asaduddin Alfayyadh, representing the Satu Persen team in the release of the 3D animated film Laut Kite, revealed that this achievement in the form of a gold medal could encourage other students, especially those from Politeknik Negeri Batam Animation Study Program, to be more enthusiastic about working and competing in all fields in the future.
Ahmad Saropi S.Tr.Kom., as an animation teacher and supervisor of the animated story script Laut Kite, explained that this achievement shows that the standard of animation work produced by Politeknik Negeri Batam students is increasing so that the potential to compete internationally is higher. Accompanied by the animation regeneration infrastructure and environment formed at Politeknik Negeri Batam, students should answer various problems through animation products developed with a critical and innovative thinking style since pre-production. The hope is that more support from the government in the creative industry, especially the animation sector, can further encourage animation development in Indonesia to give rise to many new IPs that can represent local culture and dominate the international market.
According to Anis Rahmi, S.Tr.Kom., M.Sn., as an accompanying lecturer, the achievement of this animation work not only makes the academic community of the Animation Study Program proud but also increases the accreditation value for both the Study Program and the Department, especially the Department of Informatics Engineering. The Satu Persen team represented the students’ achievement in the final round of GEMASTIK XVI 2023 in the Division V Animation category, which competed with 20 other teams from universities throughout Indonesia.”
Meanwhile, Selly Artaty Zega, S.ST., M.Sc., the head of the Animation Study Program, stated, “This achievement is very meaningful, apart from maintaining the tradition of Politeknik Negeri Batam Animation Study Program winning competitions, it is also an activity for the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM). Apart from the GEMASTIK event, the Animation Study Program has also won the ANIMAKINI competition 2022 at the national level in the 3D Animation category and the KMIPN competition in the Animation category.”
“This achievement at the national level has also increased the percentage of implementation of the MBKM curriculum in the Animation Study Program, which is of course very beneficial for students to continue to be creative and outstanding,” said Selly.
The head of the Informatics Engineering Department, Sudra Irawan, S.Pd.Si., M.Sc., mentioned that the animation products in the competition were the result of learning using the Project Based Learning (PBL) method. In PBL, students solve problems to produce solutions in the form of products, which are carried out in teams guided by project managers and lecturers who teach courses that are carried out in certain time cycles.
“Involvement in PBL can hone and improve the students’ hard skills and soft skills so that it can equip them to work in the industry in the future or can be applied to take part in competitions, for example, in the GEMASTIK XVI competition 2023,” explained Sudra.
