Polibatam Strengthens Creative Ecosystem and Copyright Protection with Kemenkum Kepri and DJKI
BATAM – Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam), in collaboration with the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law of the Riau Islands and the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), held a strengthening program to increase copyright and related rights registration. The event carried the theme “Protect Works, Create Opportunities: Registering Copyright for Creativity and the Nation’s Economy” and was held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Polibatam Auditorium.
This activity was part of an effort to enhance public understanding, particularly among the academic community and creative industry players in Batam, regarding the importance of copyright protection amid the rapid development of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI). A total of 60 participants attended the event in person, representing higher education institutions and creative industry areas in Batam City.
The event was officially opened by the Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law of the Riau Islands, Edison Manik. In his remarks, he emphasized that strengthening legal protection for intellectual works is a strategic step in safeguarding public creativity and innovation in the era of digital transformation. He stated that technological advancement and AI present new challenges, making copyright protection increasingly important in providing legal certainty for creators and innovators.
On this occasion, the Head of the Regional Office also expressed appreciation to Polibatam for its contribution as the institution with the highest number of patent registrations in the Riau Islands region. Polibatam was recognized for its strategic role in promoting a culture of innovation, research downstreaming, and Intellectual Property (IP) protection within vocational higher education.
As a form of appreciation for intellectual works, the event also included the presentation of a copyright registration certificate for the Corporate Finance Book to the Head of Polibatam’s Center for Research and Community Service. In addition, a Certificate of Designation as an Intellectual Property-Based Area was presented to the Director of Nongsa Digital Park.
The first session featured the Head of Polibatam’s Animation Study Program, Riki, S.Tr., M.F.A., who presented material on the development of the creative industry within Polibatam. In his presentation, he explained how Polibatam’s Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach encourages students to produce innovative works with potential for downstreaming and copyright protection. Various technological development fields, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, animation, application development, and game technology, are also part of Polibatam’s efforts to strengthen its creative ecosystem.
The next session was delivered by Ariyanti, S.H., M.H., Head of the Working Team for Copyright, Industrial Design, and Communal Intellectual Property Applications and Publications. She introduced the concept and procedures for copyright registration, covering legal protection for intellectual works, moral and economic rights of creators, and the importance of an Intellectual Property Center as a service and assistance hub for intellectual property management in higher education institutions.
Furthermore, Dr. Novi Mirawanty, S.T., M.Ti., Secretary of the Copyright Application Team, presented technical consultation material on copyright and related rights registration through DJKI’s e-Copyright system. Participants gained insights into the registration process, document submission, license recording, and the electronic issuance of copyright registration certificates.
The event was highly interactive, with participants actively engaging in discussions on the protection of academic works, digital creations, and the challenges of copyright protection in the digital technology era. To support direct services, the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law of the Riau Islands also provided a Mobile Intellectual Property Clinic for participants seeking consultation on Intellectual Property matters.
Through this activity, Polibatam reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a culture of innovation, creativity, and legal protection for intellectual works as part of strengthening the vocational research and technology ecosystem in Indonesia.
