Igniting the Spirit in Surabaya, Polibatam Welding Team Claims Second Overall at NWC 2026

SURABAYA – Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) has once again achieved an outstanding accomplishment at the national level. The Polibatam student delegation successfully secured the Overall Runner-Up title at the 2026 National Welding Competition (NWC), held from 13 to 17 July 2026 at the Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (PPNS).

Polibatam earned a total of 18 points, placing second behind the host institution, PPNS, which collected 29 points. This achievement is particularly remarkable, as the 2026 NWC brought together 138 participants representing 29 polytechnics from across Indonesia.

Polibatam sent 18 of its best students from three study programmes: Applied Bachelor of Welding and Fabrication Engineering Technology, Metallurgical Engineering, and Naval Architecture. All 18 delegates successfully received medals and awards across eight competition categories and five competency levels.

The achievements were earned in three welding competition groups: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).

Achievements in the SMAW Category

In the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) category, the Polibatam delegation achieved the following results:

  6. Yuni T. W. – 2nd Place, Expert Level, Women’s SMAW Plate 3G
  7. Johnson I. S. – 3rd Place, Master Level, SMAW Pipe 6G
  8. Trisno S. – 1st Place, Novice Level, SMAW Pipe 6G
  9. M. Farhan – 2nd Place, Novice Level, SMAW Pipe 6G

Achievements in the GTAW Category

In the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) category, Polibatam secured three awards:

Meanwhile, in the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) category, the Polibatam delegation achieved the following results:

  5. Mumteza H. – Competent Award, GMAW Plate 3G
  6. Farhan A. – 3rd Place, Novice Level, GMAW Plate 3G

Throughout the competition, the students were guided by a team of faculty supervisors consisting of Ari Wibowo, Chandra Defta Rusdwinanto, Asrafi, and Fajar Dwi Nuryanto.

Polibatam’s achievement as the Overall Runner-Up at the 2026 NWC reflects the quality and competence of its students in welding technology, fabrication, metallurgy, and naval architecture. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of practice-oriented vocational education, the dedication of the faculty members, and the utilisation of laboratory facilities in preparing students to meet industry competency standards.

Through this achievement, Polibatam continues to strengthen its commitment to producing competent, professional, and adaptable vocational graduates who are capable of competing at both national and international levels.
