Business Management Lecturers at Politeknik Negeri Batam Provide Industrial Work Practice Preparation for SMK Negeri 9 Batam Students

BATAM – As part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly Community Service (PkM), more than a dozen lecturers and education personnel from the Business Management Department of Politeknik Negeri Batam organized an Industrial Work Practice (Prakerin) preparation program for students of SMK Negeri 9 Batam. The program aims to equip students with the basic competencies required before entering the world of work and industry (DUDI).

The activity was held at SMK Negeri 9 Batam and attended by approximately 115 students from various study programs, including Accounting, Visual Communication Design (DKV), Animation, Electrical Engineering, and Welding. The program was designed to improve students’ readiness to enter a professional and safe working environment that meets the current needs of industry.

The series of activities began with a session on Professional Ethics held on July 20, 2026. During the session, participants gained an understanding of the importance of professional ethics in the workplace, the development of professional character, communication and appearance etiquette in the workplace, industrial work culture, as well as the importance of maintaining confidentiality and responsibility in carrying out their duties.

Furthermore, on July 22, 2026, participants attended Occupational Safety and Health (K3) training. The K3 session provided participants with an understanding of the importance of fostering a workplace safety culture, complying with safety procedures, and using work equipment safely. During the practical session, participants were also introduced to the use of various types of equipment commonly found in industrial environments, such as cutting machines and printing equipment, as well as electrical hazard prevention and the use of Portable Fire Extinguishers (APAR) as part of workplace risk mitigation.

In addition to soft skills and K3 training, the Community Service team also organized a Computer Practicum on July 20, 2026. The computer practicum focused on mastering Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheet) as well as techniques for managing and preparing documents in a neat and systematic manner. These skills are among the essential administrative competencies required across various industrial and office sectors.

The collaboration between Politeknik Negeri Batam and SMK Negeri 9 Batam will not end with the Industrial Work Practice preparation program, as several other community service programs are also planned. In August 2026, an Accounting Practicum based on the APD Module will be conducted as part of the collaborative outputs of the two institutions. The program will involve Politeknik Negeri Batam students participating in Project Based Learning (PBL) to assist the students throughout the learning process.

Furthermore, in September 2026, a Digital Business training program is planned for students from the Accounting, DKV, Electrical Engineering, and Welding study programs.

This activity represents a concrete implementation of the Business Management Department of Politeknik Negeri Batam’s commitment to supporting the improvement of vocational education quality through collaboration with vocational high schools. Through its Community Service program, Politeknik Negeri Batam not only shares academic knowledge but also strengthens students’ competencies, professional character, and work readiness, enabling them to adapt to the continuously evolving needs of industry.

The chairperson of the organizing committee stated that the program is expected to provide students with practical learning experiences so that they will be better prepared when undertaking Industrial Work Practice and when entering the workforce after graduation. Synergy between vocational higher education institutions and vocational high schools is a strategic step toward developing excellent, competent, and competitive human resources who are ready to thrive in the modern industrial era.

Through this Community Service activity, Politeknik Negeri Batam once again reinforces its role as a vocational higher education institution that actively contributes to human resource development through sustainable partnerships with the education sector and industry. (Jojo Mahsunah)
