Batam Strengthens Its Cyber Defense: Global Pentahelix Collaboration at the Freedom250 Tech Talk
BATAM – The Batam City Government has once again reaffirmed its position as a pioneer of digital transformation in Indonesia by strengthening cybersecurity and accelerating the development of digital talent. During the Freedom250 Tech Talk held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Polibatam Auditorium, cybersecurity was highlighted as a key pillar of trustworthy digital governance. The event was part of the Freedom250 celebration organized by the United States Consulate for Sumatra to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. By adopting a Pentahelix collaboration model, the forum successfully brought together representatives from government, academia, industry, civil society, and international partners to synergize in addressing the growing complexity of cyber threats amid global digitalization.
The Head of the Batam City Communication and Informatics Office (Kominfo), Rudi Panjaitan, who attended on behalf of the Mayor of Batam, emphasized that secure data protection and reliable information systems are fundamental to regional advancement. Given Batam’s strategic position as an international investment and trade hub, the risks of cyberattacks are inevitable. Rudi stressed that the continuous enhancement of information and communication technology (ICT) capacity is essential to maintaining public trust. Batam must be able to create a secure digital ecosystem, not only for foreign investors who invest their capital but also for all members of society who increasingly rely on digital-based public services.
This commitment was reinforced by insights from the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) and technology experts present at the forum. They highlighted that cyberattacks will become increasingly complex in the future, requiring a robust early-warning system and collective cyber awareness as the frontline of digital defense. Strengthening technological infrastructure must go hand in hand with the preparedness of human resources capable of operating it wisely and securely.
A crucial moment during the event was marked by the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Polibatam and Wiraraja Indonesia. This partnership represents a long-term commitment to strengthening synergy between the education sector and major industries in Batam, covering internship programs, scholarships, upskilling initiatives, applied research, and the reinforcement of the Tridharma of Higher Education. Through this collaboration, both parties aim to ensure that technological and human resource development in Batam aligns with real industry needs.
In his remarks, the Director of Polibatam, Bambang Hendrawan, emphasized the vital role of educational institutions in supporting national digital sovereignty by providing competent talent. He stated that this collaboration is a concrete step toward addressing the global shortage of cybersecurity professionals.
“The partnership between Polibatam and the U.S. Consulate is not merely ceremonial; it serves as a bridge for our students and lecturers to engage directly with global industry standards. Our primary focus is to produce digital talent that is not only technically proficient but also upholds integrity in safeguarding national data sovereignty. Through applied research and internship programs, we aim to ensure that technological innovation in Batam can be effectively downstreamed to strengthen regional cyber resilience. At Polibatam, we are committed to continuously serving as a driving force in producing outstanding human resources ready to face future cyber threats,” emphasized Bambang Hendrawan.

This strategic partnership between Indonesia and the United States is expected to generate long-term impact on cyber resilience in the Riau Islands region and beyond. With harmonious integration among government policies, academic expertise, and technological support from international partners, Batam is optimistic about becoming a model digital city that is resilient, secure, and competitive on the global stage. The Freedom250 Tech Talk concluded with an interactive discussion exploring various cyberattack mitigation strategies, marking a new chapter in Batam’s journey toward becoming a technology innovation hub that is not only physically advanced but also robust in its security systems. This transformation stands as tangible proof that cross-sector collaboration is the key to building a brighter and more secure digital future for generations to come.
