Polibatam Urges Preventive Measures and Health Protection During Haze Conditions
Batam – The haze currently affecting the Batam area requires increased awareness, particularly in maintaining health during daily activities. In response to the situation, the Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment Task Force (Satgas K3L) of Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) urges the entire academic community to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to reduce exposure to air pollution.
Members of the Polibatam academic community are advised to wear masks when engaging in outdoor activities and to limit unnecessary activities outside. The campus community is also encouraged to regularly monitor air quality updates through official information provided by the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) and other reliable official sources. If air quality continues to deteriorate, non-practical classes may be considered for online or hybrid delivery with the approval of the respective Head of Department.
While indoors, members of the academic community are advised to temporarily close windows or ventilation openings that directly allow outdoor air to enter when air quality reaches unhealthy levels. The use of air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters is also recommended when available. In addition, maintaining adequate hydration, consuming nutritious food, and avoiding smoking and other sources of air pollution are important measures to help maintain good health during haze conditions.
For those who need to travel, unnecessary journeys should be limited. Motorcycle riders are advised to wear masks while travelling, while car users are encouraged to keep windows closed and use the air-conditioning system in recirculation mode to reduce the amount of outdoor air entering the vehicle. Eye health should also be taken into consideration. If the eyes begin to feel irritated or uncomfortable, contact lenses should temporarily be avoided and replaced with glasses.
The Polibatam K3L Task Force also reminds everyone to pay close attention to their health conditions. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, severe coughing, significant eye irritation, or other persistent health complaints should immediately seek medical attention. Polibatam encourages the entire academic community to look out for one another and maintain their health throughout the haze conditions. It is hoped that air quality in Batam will improve soon so that community activities and campus operations can once again be carried out safely and comfortably.
Warm regards from Polibatam
