POLIBATAM MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM ENHANCES CAD SKILLS OF SMKN 6 BATAM STUDENTS THROUGH SOLIDWORKS TRAINING

BATAM – The Mechanical Engineering Department of Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) conducted a Community Service (PkM) activity on August 14, 2026, involving students from SMK Negeri 6 Batam. Led by Oki Setiawan, S.T., M.Eng., the program represented one of Polibatam’s contributions to strengthening vocational students’ competencies, particularly in technical drawing and Computer-Aided Design (CAD), which are closely related to the needs of industry and the workplace.

The activity was titled “CAD-Based Technical Drawing Competency Improvement Training for SMK Negeri 6 Batam Students through SolidWorks Training.” It was designed to provide students with both conceptual understanding and hands-on experience in applying technical drawing principles using SolidWorks, one of the CAD software applications widely used in product design and development.

The training materials covered the introduction and application of CAD-based technical drawing, an overview of the SolidWorks interface and basic features, 2D sketch creation, the use of dimensions and geometric relations, as well as 3D component modelling. The materials were delivered through theoretical explanations, instructor demonstrations, and direct practice, allowing participants to understand the relationship between technical drawing concepts and the modelling process using CAD software.

Throughout the activity, participants were assisted by lecturers from the Mechanical Engineering Department in completing exercises and practical assignments. Students were guided to create simple component designs using SolidWorks as an application of the knowledge they had gained. The program also included pre-tests and post-tests to measure participants’ understanding before and after the training, along with an evaluation of their practical work.

Through this community service activity, students of SMK Negeri 6 Batam are expected to improve their ability to read and create CAD-based technical drawings, particularly using SolidWorks. These skills are expected to support their learning at school while also preparing them to meet competency requirements in the workplace and industrial sectors.

The activity also provided an opportunity for lecturers from the Mechanical Engineering Department to contribute directly to the development of vocational human resources while strengthening collaboration between Polibatam and SMK Negeri 6 Batam in supporting the improvement of technical education and student skills.
