Polibatam Hosts IEEE EDS International Distinguished Lecture, Addressing Global IC Industry Challenges

BATAM, 28 February 2026 – Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) once again reaffirmed its commitment as a center of excellence in vocational education in electronic manufacturing and semiconductor technology by hosting the IEEE EDS Distinguished Lecture in collaboration with the IEEE Electron Devices Society Indonesia Chapter.

Carrying the theme “About On-Chip ESD Protection for ICs,” the international public lecture featured Albert Wang, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California Riverside, USA. Prof. Wang is also the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices and the holder of 16 U.S. patents, bringing extensive academic and industrial expertise to the forum.

In his presentation, Prof. Wang highlighted a critical fact: approximately 80% of Integrated Circuit (IC) failures in the field are caused by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD/EOS) issues—representing a multi-billion-dollar challenge for the global semiconductor industry. He introduced advanced ESD-IC co-design approaches using CAD-based tools such as TCAD and SPICE, while also addressing the technical challenges in RF ICs, which are highly sensitive to parasitic effects.

Participants also gained forward-looking insights into the future of semiconductor protection technologies, ranging from ESD protection strategies for 3D architectures and CoWoS (heterogeneous integration) systems to the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in device modeling (AI-for-ESD). These emerging innovations are increasingly vital as semiconductor devices become more complex and performance-driven.

The event was attended by the Director of Polibatam, Bambang Hendrawan, and the Chair of IEEE EDS Indonesia Chapter, Basuki Rachmatul Alam. This momentum marks a strategic step for Polibatam in supporting the development of Indonesia’s national semiconductor ecosystem and preparing highly skilled talent to compete within the global industrial value chain.
