POLIBATAM Holds “Zero Waste: Think Sustainability, Act Locally” Seminar to Strengthen Waste Management in Batam City

BATAM – Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam), in collaboration with the ITB Alumni Association of the Riau Islands and FORPASI Kepri, organized a seminar titled “Zero Waste: Think Sustainability, Act Locally” as part of a collective effort to enhance multi-stakeholder synergy in improving waste management across Batam City.

The seminar featured three keynote speakers:

  • Muhammad Iqbal Feliansyah Putra, S.IP, Head of Waste Management Division, Batam City Environmental Agency (DLH)
  • David Christian Hutagaol, S.T., M.T., Regional Coordinator of FORPASI and ITB Alumni Association of the Riau Islands
  • Arniati, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., CA, CPA, Vice Director II for Planning, Finance, and General Affairs, Polibatam

During his presentation, the representative from DLH highlighted Batam’s pressing waste challenges—ranging from the city’s daily waste generation of 1,200 tons, the lack of waste segregation at the household level, to the increasingly critical condition of the Telaga Punggur landfill. FORPASI emphasized the urgency of implementing waste separation regulations and promoting Zero Waste practices beginning at home.

Polibatam presented its concrete steps toward becoming a sustainable campus, including the development of a Waste Processing Center (TPST), composting facilities, reduction of single-use plastics, paperless initiatives, and plans for establishing a campus waste bank. Polibatam also introduced the Sustainability Community, an internal movement focused on promoting education and awareness on sustainability within the campus environment.

Through engaging discussions involving the Batam City Parliament (DPRD), academics, community organizations, and students, the seminar produced several strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening collective commitment to building a more effective and sustainable waste management system in Batam.

Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient city ecosystem.
Salam Polibatam!
