Kartini Batam Elementary School Students Visit Polibatam to Learn About Waste Management and 3D Printing

BATAM — Dozens of students from Kartini Batam Elementary School visited Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) on Tuesday and Wednesday, 6–7 October 2026, for an educational program focused on environmental awareness and technology. From 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. WIB, the students learned about waste management through presentations, recycling demonstrations, and a visit to Polibatam’s waste processing facility.

The program began at the Polibatam Auditorium with an interactive session on the importance of keeping the environment clean. Students learned how to identify and sort organic, inorganic, and hazardous and toxic waste (B3). Through engaging visual materials, they also explored how waste can affect urban ecosystems and why it should be managed responsibly.

The students were then introduced to plastic recycling technology. They learned how discarded plastic bottles can be processed into filament for 3D printers and watched a demonstration of the process. They also viewed innovative recycled products, including first-aid kits, detailed ship miniatures, figurines, and custom toys.

After the presentations and demonstrations, the students, accompanied by their teachers and the Polibatam team, visited the campus’s Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST). There, they learned how dry organic waste is turned into compost. Staff demonstrated how shredding and processing equipment helps transform the waste into nutrient-rich compost for plants.

The visit concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session and a group photo on campus. To support the program’s sustainability message, Polibatam representatives gave plant seedlings to the students and teachers to take home.
