Polibatam’s TPST Turns Leaf Waste into Compost

BATAM — The Integrated One-Stop Service Unit (TPST) of Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) is transforming leaf waste collected across the campus into compost. This initiative represents a practical step towards reducing organic waste while creating a cleaner and more sustainable campus environment.

Fallen leaves, which would otherwise be discarded, are collected and repurposed through a composting process. The leaves are separated from non-organic materials and gradually decomposed until they become nutrient-rich compost.

The resulting compost demonstrates that organic waste can provide valuable benefits when properly managed. It can be used to improve soil quality and support the maintenance of plants and green spaces throughout the Polibatam campus.

In addition to reducing the volume of waste sent for disposal, composting leaf waste can help reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers. This process returns organic matter to the soil through a more environmentally responsible approach.

The initiative also highlights the importance of separating waste at its source. Proper separation of organic and non-organic waste enables fallen leaves and other natural materials to be processed and reused instead of being sent directly to landfills.

Through this initiative, TPST Polibatam is promoting environmentally responsible practices and introducing circular economy principles within the campus. Waste is no longer viewed solely as discarded material but as a resource that can be processed into something beneficial.

This initiative is expected to continue developing and encourage greater participation from the Polibatam academic community in maintaining campus cleanliness and managing waste responsibly. Through practical actions such as this, Polibatam continues to strengthen its commitment to building a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable campus.
