Supporting Industrial Needs, Polibatam Prepares SEM-Based Material Testing Collaboration

BATAM — Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) continues to strengthen its role as a strategic partner for industry through the utilization of high-technology laboratory facilities. One such initiative is reflected in the exploration of a material testing collaboration using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with PT Hi-Test.

Polibatam owns and operates an SEM system for Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and material testing, which has been utilized in various industrial collaborations. During the technical discussion, PT Hi-Test presented plans to conduct testing on metal materials, pipes, weld joints, and fracture mechanics of metallic materials, based on technical sketches that include dimensions, welded connections, and wire-cutting methods.

The scope of testing includes SEM measurement capabilities, sample preparation methods, and microstructural observation of materials. All technical aspects can be directly reviewed through a visit to the Polibatam SEM Laboratory, managed by the Department of Electrical Engineering. Testing fees are planned to be flexible and adjusted according to the type and number of samples, while testing schedules will be arranged based on laboratory availability.

As an initial follow-up, both parties agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering the scope of the Tridharma of Higher Education, which will be followed by a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) specifically for the use of material testing equipment. Further technical coordination will focus on scheduling technical visits, preparing cost estimates for testing services, and developing an operational collaboration framework.

PT Hi-Test will also prepare detailed sample specifications, including material types, dimensions, and preparation methods, to support accurate and efficient testing plans.

The Laboratory Manager of PT Hi-Test, Suhadi, expressed his appreciation for Polibatam’s facility readiness and openness to collaboration.

“We consider Polibatam’s SEM facilities to be highly adequate and accessible for industrial needs. We hope this collaboration will enable more precise material testing and provide mutually beneficial technical solutions,” he stated.

The meeting was attended by representatives from PT Hi-Test, namely Suhadi (Laboratory Manager) and Azmi (Technical & Operational Manager), as well as representatives from Politeknik Negeri Batam involving the Electrical Engineering Department team and the Cooperation Unit. This collaboration is expected to serve as a concrete step in strengthening campus–industry synergy based on applied research and professional-standard material testing services.
